I don’t have to take notes anymore. No, wait… I do.

Today marked the end of a two-day-long super summit where the best and brightest minds in conversational marketing… have conversations. Hosted by Federated Media, this is their fourth and second in New York (I attended the first, too). (Photos here)
So what’s the deal with notes, Matt? (you may ask…) Well I have two insights I want to share (and more to come as I cogitate on the massive influx of positive stimulation I just received).
1) I wrote furious paper notes during the presentation, plus sent out Tweets on some other things… I figure I could pick up and mashup paper notes with virtual public ones later. In the back of my mind, I was thinking about relevance and juxtaposition, much like I do when approaching PPC ads. In plainspeak, I was hoping that the collective publishing effort by the crowd will fill in the gaps of the most memorable moments. Boy, was I right. If you search Twiiter on the hash #cmsummit, you’ll keep hitting “Show More Tweets” perhaps until YOUR browser decided, “that’s enough, buddy.”
One thing that is overwhelmingly clear is that in modern times, and the rising popularity of Twitter, you just might not have to keep notes if the crowd is savvy enough to all use a hashtag (ahem.. promote it!). This excludes personal insights that may be specific to your mission, business or future plans, of course.
The really wonderful thing is that they are potentially all conversations, or conversation-starters. And, the collective minds at the event caught some gems that I missed while focused on writing my own notes. Go, humanity! (grin)
On the other hand…
I will be taking more notes than ever. Why? I just ordered the Pulse by LiveScribe after seeing a simple, engaging and compelling demo by self-described “Serial Entrepreneur” Jim Marggraff (Chairman and CEO of LiveScribe).
From the same mind that made talking digital globes that morphed into LeapPad now comes the “Never Miss a Word” product that could actually change the way you approach critical thinking. I rarely get bowled over by a product demo (having done countless ones myself), but this was such a potential positive big change to productivity for me that I ordered one during the lunch break from Amazon.
Seeing all the writing come to life as searchable, exportable text is what did it for me. It is about sharing and being able to find it. (ahem, never mind being able to call out certain people who conveniently forget what they say… sure I won’t be popular for that!) The translation, calculator and musical parts are trimmings that add to its coolness. I look forward to posting “pencasts.”
No wonder their word of mouth is so strong. Good products do sell themselves.
So, simple initial insights from this year’s #cmsummit: Trust your peers to point out great things about events and happenings, and perhaps you might benefit from getting one simple tool for total recall.
