Road Trippin’, Blogging on the Road, and General Fun

Posted on | October 10, 2008 |

Just this Monday, I got back from a 10-day road trip with my good pal, errm… Zoo Broker. We live on separate coasts and met in Denver to embark on a destination-unknown road trip. My favorite kind - freeform!

We blogged the hell out of it at lifeisaroadtrip.com

More after the break:

It was exhilarating in many respects. First off, I needed a vacation very badly. Secondly, it’s the journey and not the destination. Hitting the road with Zoo is always a blast - we’ve done it twice before. To make this one even more exciting, we started a blog. We both posted pre-trip musings: me, Zoo, which I found to be revealing and stimulating. It set the tone.

And if you hadn’t notice by now, we assumed fictitious identities (complete with business cards, mind you…) for the trip. It was a lark - Zoo has traveled much, much more than I and is disenchanted by people’s opening question being, “So, what do you do for work?” Booooring. So, somewhere along the line, he just started saying he was a Zoo Broker. I chose to follow suit and become a Spammer. Yes, my tongue is firmly planted in cheek. Total irony, folks (coming from a budding young permission marketer, it’s geek humor). Let me tell you, it’s a conversation stopper - oh, baby.

We had five cameras, a tripod, two laptops, beer money and a lust for new experiences. I think it turned out OK. In fact, it was the best damn vacation I can remember having. A typical day would be:

  • wake up, get coffee and blog
  • get in the truck and drive 3 ~ 10 hours, stop periodically in small towns, cities, mountains, gravel back roads, etc.
  • arrive at city/town we would sleep in, get dinner, blog, go out to a bar, play pool, other expansive stuff
  • go out on a night shoot
  • send out email updates, post on Facebook, post on forums
  • drop to sleep, exhausted (but excited)
  • do it all over again, mix up ingredients well

We had fun seeing visitation on the Analytics, too. We could see the path of interest behind us appear on the map. Friends would drop by to leave comments on the blog - it was a vicarious experience for many, and always only a few hours behind reality.

And most of it was true. (grin) OK, our identities were really the most we obscured. Some other small fictions were made for the pure joy of it. No one was harmed during the making of the road trip. Except many fields of barley, wheat and hops.

I shot 1,958 photos, and we posted about 390 of them. Not so bad. And, most importantly, I achieved all the goals I set for myself in my pre-trip musing. How’s that for progress?

I still have a ton of panoramic images to stitch. Amazing beauty out there in America. Go check out the site, there is a lot of laughs, insights and photos. It’s worth maybe.. a day or so of your time.

And, look up “contest” in the search bar - we’re raffling off one spot in the next road trip and accepting applications for the other.

And, it was an interesting process of socializing both offline and online. Very cool.
