Music from the Vault: Emotionally Retarded
Posted on | September 6, 2008 |
This one is a raw slice of life.
If you’re uncomfortable hearing about someone else’s potent past experience, don’t listen. If you are comfortable with your place in life and perhaps don’t bear other’s problems as your own, listen and read on.
As mentioned before, this is raw. The song is a potent glimpse into a moment in my own life that is behind me. It is, in my opinion, quite beautiful in its honesty and passion.
In my life, I often choose to combat adversity with art. It lets me explore by beliefs, feelings and moments in a productive manner. My cut paper art is another example of this. I started it during a very confusing and low period in my life. It may have been instinct, or logic… The result was putting all that negative energy into making something instead of wallowing or destroying. Well, I didn’t entirely escape the wallowing :) But this helped immensely. Same with the music. It’s a wonderful way to express the urgent challenges in life. It may not end up in an answer, but in this case, it’s an accurate snapshot of that moment.
On a final note, when Dre and I make music we name the song before writing lyrics or music. So, the title, “Emotionally Retarded” was kismet (of a sort, LOL). It isn’t directed at anyone addressed in the song but it certainly could apply to everyone… including who I was at the time.
