My Digital Life

Music, Photography, Geekdom and Marketing: Matt Hill

Here’s to lookin’ at 2008, baby

Retrospect: both an excellent backup software solution and a method of reviewing the past.

2008: This year, for less than 24 hours hence.

When combined, you get the bloggy equivalent called a roundup, best of, top ## list… I’m certainly not one for “me, too!” but it’s good to collect your thoughts once in a while in order to make plans for the future.

My 2008 was rife with challenges, successes and long-term plans maturing.

What did I enjoy this year?
Music - I saw more live music this year than the last five years combined, and added so many new bands/artists to my somewhat large and diverse music library
Art - Gallery visits, my coalescing Cut Paper Art, fellow artists/friends all added a wonderful dimension
Photography - I reforged a passion for night and travel photography. My Flickr has 3,580 items now, and that is only a fraction of what I’ve shot.
Insights - a plenty.
Social Networking
- Facebook really made strides this year, MySpace bloated and hollowed itself out and it seems like the reconnection/new connection aspect of accessibility is really interesting people for dozens of reasons. And Twitter is on a pogo tick, bouncing up a staircase, flummoxing many.
The Internet - LOL… It’s my focus at work to be not only knowledgeable and proficient about websites and marketing, but also to be aware of and participating in new opportunities that are worthy of spending time. This was an explosive year personally for growth in knowledge and application.
New Friends - The quality of new friendships forged in 2008 is remarkable. Thank you, each and every one.

What did I not enjoy this year?
Why do I ask myself the hard questions? (grin)
Getting Divorced - A challenge and a solution woven in complexity
Uncertainty - This can make many cringe or cower… most of the time I just chalked it up to saying, “To hell with it” and doing something anyway. Inaction is worse than action - at least when you do something you know for sure one way or the other ;)

What else?
Well, since my second list was quite short I have to say that the thing I practiced most was seeing “problems” as “challenges” and proceeding to tackle them in a positive manner. It beats the alternative, folks. And it gets easier every time you apply it.

I met many incredible people in the photo industry who “get it” and are engaging people in interesting ways, whether it be on or off the internet. Also outside of that, reconnecting with old friends from 15+ years ago has been a lesson in life itself. All in all, I am amazed over and over again about how cool it is to be alive. We live in wonderful times.
