Music, Photography, Geekdom and Marketing: Matt Hill

To niche, or not to niche?

It’s commonly advised that a successful venture in the era of the Long Tail is a niche. I very much agree, and it is useful advice for those people who need a little Ritalin (i.e. try to jam everything and the kitchen sink into everything they do…). I, however, think that this blog could easily be characterized as “too broad”.

Look at it from another angle… The niche is me. I bet this thought is echoed through the minds of many bloggers (hell, there are MILLIONS of them!) once they discover there is a prevailing opinion out there. “Oh, shit! I’m too broad! Should I make three blogs to cover what I do in one?” Well… it depends on your goals.

The purpose of the blog is simply to share the variety of interests I have outside of my other very focused blog - MattHillArt.com. I believe it would be highly inappropriate to dilute such a pure and determined site. So I (re)started this blog to get all that other stuff out there. I like music, photography, art, marketing, social networking and more. And I sure as hell ain’t going to make a blog for each of them. In effect, this blog is a niche. I am unique in this world (quite narrow when you consider how many humans there are out there), and a blog about my interests in a niche of the narrowest kind. So there. I’m so broad I am narrow. LOLz.
