Facebook - passion, obsession or not at all?

I was having a conversation with a good friend this evening that went along these lines:
ME: I like being on Facebook. I admit I’ve been through my “obsession” period and now enjoy the whole “social experiment” part of it, plus the ambient awareness and since I know it’s all about me, I generally post links to stuff about me, not links to other stuff. I leave that to other people, and do quite enjoy some of those links. (For instance - the five people that posted the shoe-throwing at George Bush today).
HIM: I don’t see a benefit to Facebook in my life. I hope that the people I find important will take time from their lives to contact me on a personal basis and I find that more deeply enriching. Also, I think I waste less time this way.
ME: Sure, and I am not asking you to go on Facebook. I enjoy it for the reasons I stated. I find a lot of useful gems of information and contact I would not normally get. In addition, many people can have a trickle of information about whether I picked my nose today (LOL).
HIM: OK. Did you pick your nose today?
ME: Many times.
HIM: Did you post about it?
ME: No, I don’t think that is relevant to ambient awareness, and the fostering of its existence.
HIM: But I believe you will blog about this and talk about it anyway.
ME: Well…
HIIM: I don’t think I could handle talking to more than 10 people of importance in week.
ME: And I’m fine with you living your life as you see fit. I am enjoying the process of discovery on FB and letting it be what we all make it, and then some. You know, pushing boundaries.
HIM: Like what?
ME: For instance, there are some contacts that would have simply remained “business” had we not connected on FB. Since I choose a one-life approach to FB, now we have more to talk about than the photo business. It’s taken on a different dimension. And if that turns someone off, I accept the consequences. It’s all part of living authentically.
HIM: I see. It’s good when you can whittle down you life to just the people that appreciate you for who you are.
ME: Truth.

I don’t care if you use Facebook or not. It’s your life. And I do not suggest you start using it if you don’t, or vice versa. I do, however, believe that if you choose not to go outside on any given day you will miss an opportunity. Live each day like it’s your last, no matter how you choose to engage life.
