Facebook Ads Follow Their Natural Evolution

Posted on | February 8, 2009 |

As I was browsing Facebook this week, I saw that finally Facebook Ads are growing up. I know not whether it was my constant feedback about what I did not like, a corporate decision, or numerous complaints from many about the inane nature of the ad content, but I’m glad to see ads like this in my sidbar now:

I am pleased for a few reasons.

  1. I work in the professional photo industry, and not only do I know who Mary Ellen Mark is, but have also interviewed her in the past and admire much of her work.
  2. Many of my friends are photographers or in the photo industry.
  3. Some of my friends are fans (see screenshot)
  4. It’s relevant!!!!
Don’t like: I can’t read French! (Oops!) I do, however, love shooting noir et blanc.

Now here is another ad - this one from KCRW. I’m a big fan of indie music. KCRW is, too! Apparently, I have one like-minded friend who has “fanned up” on Facebook. w00t! I agree that this is something I want to know more about, so I became a fan. My first exposure to KCRW was when I bought one of their CDs in the mid- 90’s. It had a Tori Amos track on it that I wanted. Stickiness! Today, they run an internet radio station and their programming is excellent for a person like me.

Thank you, Facebook. Please continue to deliver what you hinted at delivering when you launched your ad platform. And advertisers - please consider that it’s who you are talking to, not how many.

So funny! Did you read my blog about advertisement? It looks like we are thinking about the same ideas. Oh also like the 10 facebook security tips you posted!

I’m glad to see their targeting has gotten more relevant, and specific.

It’s actually amazing how many ads I’ve really gotten something out of lately. I keep getting advertising competitions, most likely because of my “Educational Info” saying i’m an Ad major.

Also, music artists that I’m actually interested in hearing, but wouldn’t have heard of otherwise. I don’t know how they did this, because I don’t really have anything listed under my “Favorite Music.” Must be based on the Fan pages.

Either way, it’s kind of cool to see how they target ads now. It helps the audience, because you are now only exposed to ads that you are really INTERESTED in. Versus just being hit with millions of messages in vain.

TV will be more like this soon, too.. once they go through with the postponed digital crossover, that is…
